ASID Excellence in Design 2012

November 5, 2012

It was another rewarding year as MDI was recognized at the 2012 ASID Carolinas Excellence in Design Awards. Each project is judged on its own merit and whether it accomplished the goals as described in the submittal. We were proud that our design work on two Kiawah Island homes were awarded as uniquely addressing the needs of our clients. Interior design on Kiawah is always special; we are especially inspired by the surrounding habitat. Whether clients want to bring the outdoors in or just spend their time outdoors on the bike trails or golf course, Kiawah Island undeniably slows you down and encourages you to stop and stay for a while.

Here are a few snapshots from the winning “On the Coast” projects, Royal Beach and The Preserve.

Challenge: To make use of the large room’s square footage, to provide ample seating and activity space
Solution: Breaking up the space into the client’s definitive activites of bridge, reading and tv watching, the space is sectioned off as the color scheme creates a congruous flow.

Bedroom
Challenge: asymmetrical windows on a bed wall and the need for two double beds to maximize sleeping
Solution: Cover up the windows with custom drapery rods and panels to create a niche for the beds. The room’s other windows provide all the natural light needed.

Bedroom
Challenge: A room needing two more double beds and a wall of windows
Solution: Custom made beds with a headboard that scoops under the windows.

Living Room
Complimenting the open layout, the symmetry of this room doesn’t fight with the architecture. Swivel chairs allow for tv watching or for directing one’s attentions toward the kitchen or view.

Dining Room
A multipurpose dining room takes advantage of the view and provides the client with a supremely functional space.

Master bedroom
A tv is concealed in the console at the foot of the bed. It pops up and can be swiveled to the bed or to the chairs on the opposing wall.

Thank you to all of the ASID folks who put on October’s event. And congratulations to our fellow designers.
