Bold color is making waves in the world of luxury interior design. In fact, when it comes to creating a memorable space, few design elements pack as much punch as bold color. Gone are the days of bespoke design being completely synonymous with simple beiges and creams. We’re excited to participate in the era of statement-making color!

As a luxury interior design firm, we understand the balance between boldness and sophistication is a delicate one. Bold color doesn’t have to be loud or overwhelming; it should be strategically used to incorporate some drama and personality into a space without causing a headache. Our approach is all about finding the perfect harmony between dramatic and refined.

Balance Bold Color With Textured Neutrals

Too much rich color can become overwhelming in large open spaces. To prevent the bold color from overpowering the space, pair a single vibrant color with textured creams and grays to create a perfect playful balance. A cream patterned wall-covering provides the perfect backdrop for these green living room built-ins, while the rich orange dining room walls are balanced out by the neutrals in the rest of the room. The rich, bold color acts as a focal point, while the textured neutrals offer depth and warmth.

Challenge the Status Quo

Traditionally, when people hear “bold colors in interior design,” they envision bold wall colors or textiles. We flipped the script in this living room and hallway, instead going bold on the trim and ceiling, while keeping the walls a calming neutral. The result is an unexpected sense of Parisian luxury.

Dare to Go Bold With Small Spaces

When it comes to bold color, larger spaces can feel intimidating, so we suggest starting small! Smaller spaces offer the perfect opportunity to incorporate bold color to make a statement. Powder rooms, reading nooks, laundry rooms, and butler pantries are the ideal spaces to experiment, as they’re not the very first thing you see when you enter the home. The deep teal wall color makes this bar feel like a refined escape, while the bright floral wallpaper in this powder room adds just a touch of femininity.

Don’t Underestimate Bold Accents

If painting walls or built-ins feels like too big of a commitment, introducing brightly patterned textiles can offer that same sense of playfulness. Vibrant area rugs, bedding, headboards, and window treatments can bring the same lively energy that a bold wall color would, but with more flexibility. We suggest experimenting with the color wheel a bit here as well, playing with complementary or analogous colors to give the space a dynamic feel. The textiles in this coastal dream home bedroom and this ion eclectic bedroom create two completely different vibes against white walls.

While we love a good clean neutral design, we’re so happy to see the rise of color in luxury interior design. When used strategically, bold color creates a balance that is both luxurious and playful.
