The client’s objectives were simple: Create a sophisticated home for the large family to come together in a relaxing and comfortable environment. Provide a place for all, from the youngest grandchild to the oldest adult, to have their own place to sleep. And, offer several areas for lounging and relaxation.
While unencumbered by a strict budget, there were some obstacles. Providing living, dining, and sleeping for a family of 16, within a six-bedroom home, is no easy feat. The designers were also faced with the task of creating the sophisticated environment desired by the client while, at the same time, creating a feeling of true livability that allows for family and guests to feel comfortable and relaxed.
Donaldson used a well-edited collection of washable or pretreated stain resistant fabrics, which allows the family to live freely and happily throughout the house. There are no “off limit” rooms in this family friendly home.
In order to accommodate large numbers for long family weekends, Donaldson got creative. There are two separate dining areas on either side of the kitchen island with custom tables. The open concept of the kitchen and dining areas allows for everyone to eat together.
The need to sleep 16 resulted in built in beds in the extra-large bunkroom that can accommodate 10, as well as mirror image bedrooms on the third floor with beds built into the eaves that take advantage of this often-ignored space.
